Indonesia 1965-2025: when past and present collide
At the time of the US escalation in Vietnam, Indonesia was the scene of one of the worst bloodbaths in modern history, committed under the auspices of Washington and London. Sixty years later, the archipelago is at the heart of youth revolts against the privileges of the oligarchy and corruption, in defence of a democracy dearly won back since 1998. A democracy that the current president Prabowo Subianto openly repudiates by making General Suharto, the perpetrator of the aforementioned (…)

Antisemitism (Australia): Communities condemn killings at Hanukkah event in Bondi
There has been an outpouring of solidarity and condemnation by community organisations and political parties about the killing of 15 people in Bondi at a Chanukah by the Sea event on December 14.
Some, such as Amnesty International, are warning against governments exploiting the tragedy to enact new anti-protest, anti-freedom-of-expression laws.
The Jewish Council of Australia said: “We are horrified and shaken in the wake of the mass shooting at a Chanukah event in Bondi this evening … (…)

Statement (Australia): Socialist Alliance condemns killings at Hanukkah event in Bondi
Socialist Alliance expresses its full solidarity with the victims and survivors of the horrific December 14 massacre at Bondi Beach on Gadigal Country.
The mass shooting at a Hanukkah event targeted people of Jewish faith while at a religious festival. Antisemitism, like all forms of racism, is utterly repugnant.
The Jewish community, like all those who face racism, should all be able to gather, and practice their culture, in safety.
This is a further trauma for members of the Bondi (…)

Bangladesh - When Hope Turns into Illusion: Reflections on the Yunus Government
The hope that once emerged among the people of Bangladesh around Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus was not merely confidence in an individual. Rather, it was the expression of a deeper yearning for a transformation of the state system, political morality, modes of governance, and the overall character of politics—in a word, a new political settlement. After years of party-centered authoritarianism, election-related violence, administrative corruption, predatory development, and democratic (…)

Kast: Chile's 'democratic route' back to Pinochetism
With José Antonio Kast's victory, Pinochetism returns to power through electoral means, articulating neoliberal restoration, moral authoritarianism, and anti-communism as a response to Chile's crisis.
On Sunday 14 December, the far-right politician José Antonio Kast won by a wide margin (58.2%) in the presidential run-off against the incumbent government candidate and member of the Partido Comunista de Chile (Communist Party of Chile), Jeannette Jara (41.8%).
The result falls within (…)
