The relationship between feminist movements and lesbian and trans activists in Indonesia reveals fundamental tensions about what feminism means in the world's largest Muslim-majority country. These tensions reflect not merely conservative religious opposition, but deeper questions within feminist organisations themselves about whether they can reconcile commitments to gender equality with interpretations of Islam that many members hold dear. Understanding these internal dynamics requires (…)

“The more attention I give these cases, the more keep arriving”, says Dušica Radojčić, chair of Croatia's Parliamentary Committee for Environmental Protection. She represents Možemo! (“We Can!”), a green-left political platform that emerged from civic movements and was established as a political party in 2020. “The more attention I give them, the more keep arriving”, says Dušica Radojčić from the Možemo! party, chair of the parliamentary Committee for Environmental Protection, about (…)

For Papuan women, nurturing seeds is part of a long journey of healing wounds. This was experienced by Mama Awin Keti. She is a survivor of the 1998 Biak Massacre. The painful experience she endured is expressed through the practice of planting food crops, such as upland rice seeds and millet. For Mama Awin, planting is a way of restoring herself, in the midst of a state that has never resolved cases of human rights violations, especially against women and children. The same path was (…)

I wish to commend the Indonesia's Nature Resources Conservation Agency,(BKSDA) Papua for their swift action in following up on the discovery of live endemic wildlife trade in several areas of Papua. In the latest operation, officers discovered more than 60 live birds intended for sale, as well as 54 others that had been killed, preserved, and made into decorative crowns from Birds of Paradise feathers. All evidence was seized from a number of souvenir traders in harbour and market areas. (…)

Indonesia's press freedom has collapsed under President Prabowo Subianto, a former general during the Suharto dictatorship, was elected president in 2024 and took office in October 2024. , with the country plummeting 16 places to 127th globally in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index—the worst decline since democratic reforms began in 1998. A Rp 200 billion ($12.5 million, €11.8 million) lawsuit filed by Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman against Tempo magazine in July 2025 crystallises a (…)

While Israeli settlers drive Palestinians from their land through violence, another, quieter expulsion continues through bureaucracy and law Nabi Samwil, in September. The village lies in the Seam Zone: an immense area open to Israelis and closed to Palestinians.Credit: Yahel Gazit As the strike force of Yesha-stan (combining Yesha, the official acronym for Judea, Samaria and Gaza, with the state-like suffix -stan) devotedly carries out its missions in the West Bank, expelling as many (…)
